Background
In my civilian life I worked in the Safety Department of a Major Hospital
in Dayton and wrote all of the data base programs used to keep
track of the OSHA regulations.
I never heard of OSHA until one day they knocked on the
Safety Director's door and wanted to talk.
My life and the entire management of the Hospital changed forever!
My job was to write the programs to comply with the OSHA regulations.
My job was easy, the implementation of my programs were mind
boggling, time consuming, expensive and always changing.
OSHA
OSHA is concerned with safe work conditions. They have a set of
regulations to cover just about everything work related.
And, if they find something 'amiss' that is not a regulation,
they simply create a new reg and it becomes the law.
OSHA is a good idea and a good thing, the only problem is trying
to comply with their regs. They are very concerned with rules
and regulations and they a very strict in demanding your
compliance. If they need to call in other organizations
such as Fire Marshall, Police Department, Permits groups,
etc., they will in a heartbeat.
You must not only dot your i's and cross your t's, but you
must show them the details on how you arrived at your data.
Most of our meetings were concerns about policy and procedure
rather than a particular incident.
They encourage people to report violations and they do a lot
of surprise inspections.
They are very concerned that you have everything documented
and everyone is aware of the rules and regs.
Example
One of the major things that happened at the hosptial concerned
an OSHA regulation and patient rooms and the length of
the door in regards to air flow. It was determined that we
had to cut 1/2 inch off every door in the hospital. I
wrote a program to write work orders for all 800+ rooms.
It took me 2 hours. It took the poor maintenance guys
over 9 months to complete all of the work orders.
Concerns
My concerns about OSHA and the Adult industry are profound.
I think that eventually there will be Consent Forms that
will have to be filled out for each movie.
* Explaining the risks involved in various sex actitivies.
* A form required to be signed by the actor and studio
that the rules have been explained and the actor is
okay with the possible problems.
* Questionable activities (or risky activities) will be
no more. Among these I would guess choking, degrading
women, spitting on face and open mouth, head stomp,
cream pies, double anal, a2m. etc.
* Semen disposal will be a big issue.
* Condoms will probably be required.
* Facials?
* Proof of permits will be required.
* Proof of insurance will be required.
* Possible mininum age of 21 to perform.
This will become a major paperwork problem and they love
nothing better than to catch you not in compliance and/or
paperwork violation.
Prediction
It is going to depend on how much OSHA decides to enforce the regs.
Periodic Enforcement:
This will just mean new rules and regulations for the
Studio and the Director. Not much will happen and they
will issue violations every once in awhile and fine
the Studios and slap the Directors on their wrists.
Full Enforcement:
This will be a major change for the Studios and Directors
and we will all see the results. Those who violate the
regs will be fined heavily and will really feel the heat.
Those small studios who decide to work outside the regs
will be out of business real quick.
Small studios will be forced to merge with larger studios
and there will much fewer movies produced.
It is going to be very interesting what will happen. It
can range from very little changes to just a few Studios
being able to comply with all the regs.
My first exposure to OSHA was enough and I don't want
anymore run ins with them. It is not a fair fight, they
always win!
Insurance
All movie productions will be required to have insurance and the
insurance companies will be as demanding as OSHA. They are
not going to insure anyone who is not OSHA compliant.
Agents
Not sure if agents will be involved in this. But my guess is
Agents will demand that the Studios be complaint and they
will not send their gals on jobs where they are not
complaint.
Stars
I am all in favor of safety and protecting the Porn Stars.
Without them, there is no adult industry. I think
they should be told of possible dangers and they
should refuse to work in unsafe conditions. No one
wants any major outbreaks. I will never forget in
the late 1990s how sick I felt when one of our
major stars (and others) got HIV. To this day
I can't forgive the guy responsible for it.
I don't know the answer to all of this. It looks
like OSHA will become a part of the adult
industry. I just hope they don't turn the world
upside down!
My special thanks to the Porn Stars.
